The Importance of Homework
At Darwen Vale High School, we believe that homework plays a vital role in supporting students' learning and academic success. Homework helps students to:
-
Consolidate and reinforce learning from lessons.
-
Develop independent study skills and self-discipline.
-
Improve organisation and time management.
-
Prepare effectively for assessments and examinations.
-
Build confidence and resilience through regular practice.
Through consistent completion of homework, students develop the habits and skills needed to become successful lifelong learners.
Homework Expectations
All students are expected to complete and submit homework by the deadline set by their teacher. Homework is an important part of our curriculum and is designed to enhance classroom learning.
Students who fail to complete homework will receive a -3 detention in line with the school's behaviour and rewards policy. Parents and carers are encouraged to support students in establishing regular homework routines at home.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
At Key Stage 3, students will receive homework online on a weekly basis from their:
-
Mathematics teacher
-
English teacher
-
Science teacher
These tasks are designed to reinforce key knowledge and skills taught in lessons, whilst encouraging students to develop positive study habits from an early stage.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)
At Key Stage 4, students will receive homework from all subject areas.
Homework at this stage has a strong focus on preparing students for their GCSE examinations and may include:
-
Retrieval and revision activities
-
Examination-style questions
-
Knowledge organisers and recall tasks
-
Extended writing and coursework preparation where appropriate
-
Independent revision using subject-specific resources
Regular completion of homework at Key Stage 4 is essential in helping students achieve their full potential and develop the independent learning skills required for success in examinations and further education.

Supporting Your Child
Parents and carers can support their child by:
-
Encouraging a regular homework routine.
-
Providing a quiet space for study where possible.
-
Checking that homework is completed on time.
-
Encouraging students to seek help from teachers when needed.
-
Promoting the use of revision and learning resources recommended by the school.
By working together, we can ensure that every student develops the knowledge, skills and work ethic needed to thrive both in school and beyond.
