Year 10 Match report vs St.Bedes
We have a very good team at Y10. Rio Alston, Tinashe Kamanga and Kyle Maquarrie in particular the key players. These boys were up for it, you could see from the warm up, through the team talk and into the line ups. They did not disappoint. We started the game with high energy and high skill. We took an early lead through a Kewan Najat header from a corner. Something we had been working on in training a week earlier. 1-0. Alston in particular was running the show in midfield and the 2nd goal came from a ball over the top to Burrell who’s shot was saved only for Maquarrie to blast it in 2-0. We had no trouble from Bedes with the defence staying strong and Tom Morley in goal sweeping up any danger. Towards the end of the 1st half another perfect through ball from Alston sent Maquarrie through to round the keeper to make it 3-0. HT whistle went, the boys elated. The changing room was full of energy. The message, keep doing the same things, stay tight, don’t do anything silly. If they get 1 back, they may get 2 or 3 with the momentum. Stay focussed. And then….
The unthinkable happened. Bedes got one back, then another and then another. 3 goals in 10 minutes. The boys shell shocked. Nothing special from Bedes, we just made those silly mistakes that we discussed at HT. Heads down, Bedes took the lead 4-3. One last big effort was required. We had a goal ruled off for offside to make it 4-4. Then a last-minute corner gave us one last chance. The ball fell to Najat again but this time the ball looped up for the keeper to save. Final whistle, full time, Vale lost 3-4!
The boys were devasted. The changing rooms silent. They gave everything in that game and gave it their best shot. I was really happy with the way some of our more challenging pupils around school dealt with the disappointment. Najat in particular shaking every one of the oppositions hands and saying well done. We will learn from his and move onto next season, full of confidence to rectify what happened. Proud of them.
