The 1914 Christmas Truce
Christmas 1914 – soldiers in the trenches around Ypres hold a truce. Weapons down, they meet in No Man’s Land. It’s unplanned and unexpected. German, French, British, Belgian and Indian soldiers sing Christmas songs, exchange souvenirs, and take photographs together. Some even play football.
Here at Darwen Vale, our YR7, YR8 and YR9s recreated this Christmas Truce Football Match during their PE lessons. They truly captured the spirit and respect of the event and were a credit to the school. We are proud of the way all the pupils endured the freezing and muddy conditions to make this a success and pay their respects to the lives sacrificed during the World War”
